Successful Closing of the Congress

With two conferences on alternative energy sources and climate change, Club David, ended on Friday, May 20, the International Congress of Science and Technology for Sustainable Development, organized by the Regional Center of the Technological University of Panama (UTP ) in Chiriqui.

In the first lecture, Dr. Carlos Patino, the Mexican Institute of Water Technology (IMTA), entitled Climate Change and Watershed Management, noted the research being conducted at this institute, to forecast climate changes in to hidrometereología, hydrology, river mechanics, water quality, training of human resources, communication and information.

The closing lecture of the conference, "Alternative sources of power generation and new ways to mitigate its side effects on the environment," was presented by Mr. Azael Knight Jaramillo, GDF Suez Energy Central America.

This exhibition was part of the Panamanian situation regarding alternative energy sources, highlighting the increased energy that occurs at a certain time of year and the yellow alert which was the country for possible power outages during the first half of May and this, mainly due to the use of air conditioners at the high temperatures and that many of the country's hydroelectric plants are not capable.

Jaramillo also referred to the exchange (not sale) of energy between Panama and Costa Rica, the way energy is produced, its price, demand and alternative energy sources, how these, how they behave, how they are obtained, Which countries produce and stressed the need for each Panamanian "instead of saying something, you have to, such as reforestation."

After the lecture, it was the closing ceremony in which the Regional Center Director, Mr. Abdiel Saavedra, thanked everyone for the development of the congress, both the National Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation (SENACYT) the organizers, participants and exhibitors, and left open the possibility of continuing to make this congress in the coming years.

Dr. Oscar Ramirez, Advisor to President's Office, on behalf of the Rector, Mr. Marcela Paredes de Vasquez, gave closing remarks and emphasized how successful was the conference.
In the end, the Folkloric Ballet of the headquarters of the UTP delighted the audience with a Mosaic Folk.
